COUPLING PICKED OUT FOR US PRIMETIME(ish)
* Reports on UK and US websites have named Coupling as a possible replacement for the popular US series friends when it completes it's ninth and final series on the US NBC television network. However, on account of the yanks being unlikely to 'get' either the UK dialogue or dialect, the series that airs on NBC will be re-shot in LA and stocked with US talent. A pilot will film in October which will be co-produced by Hartswood Films (the UK makers) and Beryl Vertue, executive producer of Coupling, told The Times that NBC producers were "very enthusiastic about the show and said they didn't want to tone it down." We'll see...
Ben Silverman, the producer overseeing the project for NBC, said the programme was different to Friends, "It's kind of a next-generation sitcom. It is really honest and edgy, and the humour flows more organically. It is a smart and fresh comedy."
Well we knew that already Mr Silverman! We just wonder who'll get the coverted Jeff-slot?
OTHELLO
* Othello, (described as 'a brilliantly original and stylish new version of Shakespeare's great tragedy'), has won the $50,000 Global Television Grand Prize at the 23rd Banff Rockie Awards. It was one of several prize-winning British productions and co-productions. Othello was also named best in its category, taking home the Rockie for Best Made-for-TV Movie.
