INFO:
Don Carlos is passionately in love with Elizabeth, the French Princess to whom he was once betrothed.  Carlos’ tyrannical father, King Philip II of Spain, decides to marry Elizabeth himself.  The young prince’s hatred for his cold and distant parent knows no bounds.  He enlists his oldest friend the Marquis of Posa to act as go-between.  But Posa decides to convert Carlos and Elizabeth’s youthful passion into a full scale rebellion against King Philip’s oppressive and bloody regime.

Mike Poulton has translated acclaimed productions including Euripides’ ION, Chekhov’s UNCLE VANYA and Turgenev’s FORTUNE’S FOOL for which he received a Tony nomination.

Michael Grandage is joined by a distinguished creative team that includes Designer Christopher Oram (whose work for Sheffield Theatres includes SUDDENLY LAST SUMMER, A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM, WORLD MUSIC and THE TEMPEST; other work includes HENRY IV, Donmar Warehouse and OLEANNA, Garrick Theatre) and Lighting Designer Paule Constable (JUMPERS, National Theatre and STREET OF CROCODILES for Theatre de Complicité Olivier Award nomination, 1999).
The cast includes Richard Coyle (AFTER MISS JULIE, Donmar Warehouse, COUPLING, BBC 2) as Don Carlos, Derek Jacobi (last seen at the Crucible in Michael Grandage’s acclaimed production of THE TEMPEST – other recent work includes THE LONG FIRM, BBC2) as King Philip II of Spain, Claire Price (whose work at the Crucible includes THE TEMPEST, MEAN TEARS and RICHARD III – other recent work includes CYRANO DE BERGERAC at the National Theatre) as Queen Elizabeth and Una Stubbs (last seen at the Crucible in Michael Grandage’s productions of TWELFTH NIGHT, AS YOU LIKE IT and THE COUNTRY WIFE) as the Duchess of Olivarez.
